Some things you shouldn’t forget to bring when speargun hunting - fishing!
Posted by Darrell under: SPEARFISH HUNTING! .
This past weekend my friends and I went spearfishing. There were a couple things that we all forgot that I wish we had remembered. I decided to put together a list of things to bring so that this won’t happen again.
-
All your scuba/snorkeling gear
-
Good air
-
Wetsuit (even in warm water it helps)
-
Your spear gun, shaft, and tip, along with a shock cord
-
Spare shaft, tips, and shock cord (I’ve lost or broke all of these while spearfishing)
-
Anti fog for your mask
-
Underwater flashlight
-
Stringer of some sort
-
Underwater Camera (even a disposable will do)
-
Dive Tool (Knife for those of you who don’t speak scuba) for cutting yourself free of fishing line!
-
GPS - for marking good spots (leave this in the boat)
-
File (for sharpening tips)
-
Swimmers Ear
-
Plenty of water and healthy food
-
Sunscreen (I got fried on this trip)
-
Sunglasses
-
A good map of whatever lake you are hunting
-
Extra batteries for your GPS, Flashlight, & Camera
-
Fillet knife
If I missed anything, please let me know! I’m going to use this as my checklist for spearfishing in the future.

In regard to your speartips, you guys should check out Hawaiian shafts , or Tahitian shafts as they’re sometimes called. No speartips. All you do is sharpen the spearshaft itself. It uses a single flopper about 3 inches back from the point and leaves plenty of room to sharpen and resharpen the tip. Plus it’s MUCH sleeker than JBL and other screw-on tips. It just slices through the fish like a hot knife through butter!
Gook Luck!
