Alaska Black Bear Taxidermy - Finally, Found Juneau Taxidermist to Take Care of My Bear!

I received a call from a taxidermist in Juneau today. The timing was almost perfect as I had just talked to Keegan (Ocean Point Alaskan Adventures) about what to do with my hide. I really wanted to have it tanned here so I wouldn’t have to worry about it being damaged (temporarily lost and thawed out) in shipping.
I arranged for it to be picked up by the taxidermist. He agreed to tan the hide and to bleach my skull. I told him that I will have a local taxidermist do a full mount with it later.
He is charging $49 a linear foot (my huge bear is going to cost a bunch!) for tanning the hide and up to $150 for the detail work (turning the lips, taking out the paws, etc), and $200 for bleaching the skull. It seemed reasonable except the skull bleaching, but I’m not going to argue about it. I’m just glad to have someone taking care of it. He said it would be ready to ship to me in September. Awesome!
BTW, I called 2 Taxidermist (repeatedly) and Mike is the only one to call me back. It just so happens that he is doing Chad Poppe’s (my guide) brown bear right now, too.

UPDATE: I received my bear hide and it has a problem. The pads have been cut out of the paws making a full mount really difficult. I’ve contacted Mike about it and have not yet heard back from him. Stay tuned.
