June 4, 2007 - Day 9 in Alaska - Back in Juneau

Fishing for Dolly Varden in AlaskaPictures from day 9 in Alaska.

Chad, our guide, came by the hotel today and picked us up. We went by his boat and picked up my meat. He then took us to the meat processor and helped get that arranged. I’m having the backstrap frozen, 15 pounds of pepperoni, and the remainder made into summer sausage. We then went by the taxidermist who wasn’t in. I’ll probably just have Keegan ship my frozen hide to me, along with my meat when it is finished (which should take about 1 week).

We went out to Auke Bay and had lunch at the Hot Bite (which is only place to eat here). The food was good (Halibut and chips) and we headed back to town. We went by Chad’s place and he picked up another pickup truck. He said I could use the other truck (which belongs to his roomate Cole) until I left town on Saturday. “Just leave it at the airport and I’ll pick it up”. Pretty amazing!

I then followed him back to his boat where we met up with Keegan and his dad Tom. All these guys are really cool. They set us up with fishing gear and drew us a map of some local honey holes. We took off in our ‘borrowed’ truck and with our ‘borrowed’ fishing gear.

Caleb and I decided to go back to the hotel before going fishing. Where we were going was known to have some bears around so I wanted to pick up some protection (Titanium .44 Mag). While at the hotel we decided that we really needed to do some laundry, so we sacrificed a couple houts at a local laundry mat washing all of our dirty clothes.

After the laundry we headed to Amalga Harbor to fish for Dolly Varden. This was a beautiful spot about 15-20 minutes out of Juneau. Caleb caught one Dolly and one Double Ugly. It was a gorgeous place to fish.

Keegan had invited us to eat dinner with Chad, his dad, and himself; so I called him on the way back into town. Caleb and I met them at The Hangar, which is a local favorite and we had a great dinner. One of Keegan’s best friends (Jake) and his wife were also there. Jake is a commercial hard hat diver and was a fun guy to spend an hour with.

Before departing the restaurant and saying our goodbyes, Keegan and his dad gave us a list of some things we could do to fill the remainder of our time in Alaska. We really are too early for the good fishing - so Caleb and I might concentrate on sightseeing. We are thinking about taking a float plane to Taku and/or taking the Ferry to Skagway (Tom’s idea).

It was another beautiful day in Alaska.

Jake
