We woke up to another beautiful Alaskan day. It was raining lightly and quickly cleared up. Tom set Caleb up with a spinning reel to cast for Dolly Varden and he set another one with some meat on bottom. Tom quickly reeled in a giant King Crab which we promptly released as it wasn’t King Crab season. Caleb switched to bottom fishing and caught several crabs and one Irish Lord, which the locals refer to as double uglies. We had a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, potatoes, and biscuits and gravy – which was all great.

We then hung Terry and my bear hides on the side of Keegan’s boat and got some photos. It was like a scene out of one of those 1930’s outdoor life articles. Pretty cool. We then squared the bears and my bear squared at 7’5”, which is an impressive black bear. Terry and Kevin had Keegan measure their bear skulls and argued for a while over whos was bigger. They looked exactly the same to me and Keegan said they were both about 19 ¼”, which is a big bear! I think mine is close to 20”, which is a really big bear!

Terry and I are the first archery hunters to take a bear with Keegan’s operation. It was pretty cool having our hides hang next to each other. I, by the way, was the FIRST archery hunter to be successful with Keegan. That is a pretty cool honor.

Keegan’s clients used their satellite phones to contact their offices. They then had their personal assistants change their flight plans and asked Keegan to return them to Juneau so they could return home. So, we all departed the bay we were anchored up in. Chad, Caleb, and I decided to once again try our hand at some King Salmon trolling & headed off towards Young’s Bay.

The King Salmon and us just have not been in sync. We were, again, unable to catch one. The channel was really choppy today and Caleb got really sick. He never vomited, but he just laid around and did a lot of moaning. We decided to head back to Juneau, as I need to get my meat to the processor and my hide to the taxidermist asap, anyway. On the way, Chad fixed us some venison burgers. The deer up here are blacktail Sitka deer, and they taste really, really good!

I called the Goldbelt Hotel and moved my (re)arrival date up a couple days. After the 5 hour boat ride we arrived in Juneau around 10:30. We unloaded my gear and clothes from the boat and Chad drove us over to the Hotel. It was the end of a good hunt and a great Alaskan experience.
