Where to Shoot A Bear
Posted by Darrell under: A Trilogy - 3 Methods of Pursuit .
Bears can be hard to kill. For this reason, you want to place your shot carefully. In fact, many outdoor writers and websites claim that a 300 mag rifle is the minimum acceptable caliber for taking a bear and some even claim a .44 mag handgun may not stop a charging bear.
Prior to departing on my Alaska coastal black bear hunt, Cabella’s sent me the attached diagram “Bear Shot Placement”. I have taken a picture of both sides and attached it to this post for your reference. As you can see from the drawings, a bear’s vitals are best exposed when the bear is standing sideways and you can aim directly behind the top of his front leg (as close to leg as possible). As the Bear’s angle changes, so does the percentage of the bear’s vitals that are exposed (and your chances of a clean shot).
So take your time and wait until the bear is offering you a good clean kill shot.

Be sure to hit the right spot the first time. I would hate to see you come back without a face.
