May 27, 2007 - ARRIVED IN ALASKA!

Our harbor view from our room in the Goldbelt Hotel. Our Pictures  From May 27

What we did today:

We sat in airports and rode in airplanes for hours upon hours!

Springfield, Missouri

We got up early and headed out to the airport. I was nervous about checking my gun (I’m taking a Taurus 444 .44 Magnum back-up gun with me. I was afraid it would be a hassle. It wasn’t! It took an extra 3-4 minutes as someone from TSA had to come out front and check that the gun was not loaded and then OK it. It was that easy. Our United flight departed at 11:49 for Denver.

Denver, Colorado

We arrived in concourse B of the Denver airport. We then had a 3 hour layover, before our Alaskan Airlines flight was to depart for Seattle. We took the tram over to Concourse C, which Alaskan Airlines works out of, and found our departure gate. We decided to have lunch at Timberline Steaks and Grille. The food was good and priced Ok (for airport food). I killed the remainder of my layover time writing post for this site. At the Denver airport you can log into AT&T wireless for a $7.95 fee.

Seattle

WE arrived on time into Seattle Airport C gate. We rode the tram over to D gate and  grabbed some dinner at the Great American  Bagel Bakery. We didn’t have much time and headed to our gate for the final departure of the day. Our plane departed at 7:17 Pacific time. On to Alaska!

Juneau, Alaska at Last

About 14 hours after we embarked on our journey we arrived in Juneau. Our flight from Seattle stopped briefly in Ketchikan where most of the passengers (Seattle to Ketchikan was completely full) de-planed. I was dissapointed when a drunk guy two rows in front of me stayed on the plane. He had been making a scene for the past hour or more - yelling out stuff and moving all over the place. I was surprised (pleasantly) when two police officers boarded the plane in Ketchikan and arrested him - a good reminder why its important to remain sober while in the air.

Our luggage arrived (all of it!) and in relatively good shape. I was elated! We called the Goldbelt hotel where we are staying and asked to be picked up at the airport. We then walked outside and got our first view of Juneau. Beautiful, even with the concrete and light poles of the airport in the forground. We arrived and checked into the Goldbelt Hotel, which we had been ‘told’ was the nicest hotel in Juneau. It isn’t anything to write home about, but the people are nice and we have a great view of the harbor (complete with two cruise ships) and mountains right from our window.

We had enough light to see until about 10:30 pm. It is raining, of course. We can’t wait until tomorrow!

Enjoy the trip. Sounds like it should be great. I hope to go to Alaska when my kids get old enough to remember it.

Glad to hear you made it safely on your trek north to Alaska, Darrell! The pictures from your plane are absolutely stunning - I can’t wait to see and read more. Best of luck!
