May 23, 2007 - 4 Days to Alaska

What I did today to prepare:
Today I shot my bow extensively. A couple friends came over in the evening and we played a couple archery games we have made up. I focused most of my attention at shooting between 20 and 40 yards. I’m consistently hitting within 2 inches at 20 yards, 4 inches at 30 yds, and 5 inches at 40 yards. 4 out of 5 shots will be within the bullseye circle at any distance 40 yards or less. The problem, though, is that my heart is not pounding in my chest like it will be when I’m within 40 yards of a big bear.
Since I was shooting on a hillside and having to walk up and down the hill, I was able to get my heart rate and breathing rate up a little - to simulate shooting after a hike. I also practiced shooting from all different positions including, knealing, on one knee, on both knees, sitting on a rock, sitting on the ground, and standing.
Tomorrow, I plan to mess with my cameras to make sure I have everything ready. I recently bought an Olympus Stylis 770 SW digital camera which is 7.1 Megapixel, but more importantly to me, is ultra compact (3.5″ x 2 1/4″ x 3/4″) and is shockproof and waterproof up to 33 feet. After I return from Alaska, I’ll write a full review of my experience with this camera.
