Preparing to Leave for My New Mexico Elk Hunt with Wade Johnson
Posted by Darrell under: Elk .
I leave in just a couple days for New Mexico. I will be hunting Elk in unit 16C in the Gila National Forest. I am really excited and looking forward to this trip. My wife is equally excited, as it means that she will get our living room back.
I currently have our living room filled with gear. I keep promising her that I will get it all packed up “soon” and she will have her living room back. However, she has pointed out that the gear keeps piling up and nothing seems to be getting packed. Tonight, I plan to resolve this situation.
It is amazing how much there can be to get everything done. I start with a list of what I want to bring. I usually start the list a month or more in advance (because I’ll often be adding to the list up until the day I leave) and then as I pack the items, I check them off the list. My list keeps growing, but so far I haven’t checked anything off. I’ve made a couple emergency trips to Bass Pro Shops to grab stuff that is on the list, but that I cannot somehow seem to find. You know what I’m talking about - the stuff that you end up buying for every major outing and it always seems to dissapear afterwards - somehow.
Anyway, I’m finally ready to pack it all up. Then, after a day of trying to get my secular life in order, I’ll be ready to head to the mountains (and not the Busch kind). I’ve spoken recently to Wade Johnson, my outfitter, and he did nothing to defuse my excitement. He did note that it was a tough bow season and that the elk never seemed to rut or really start talking. I’ve had my own experience with those types of bow seasons.
I did purchase a new gun for this trip. It is a Browning X-Bolt Medalion in 325 WSM caliber. It is a beautiful gun and (so far) I love the way it shoots. I plan on writing a review of it when I get back from New Mexico. I’ve bought or otherwise aquired a few other pieces of new gear which I also plan on reviewing such as the Zenray Summit binoculars. My acquistion of these glasses is an interesting story in itself.
I’m fresh out of time for writing so send me along with good wishes. Hopefully, my next post will include pictures of a big bull elk!

I saw you are using a summit binoculars. My buddy has it and raved about it. I was about to get them, but they were sold out until later this year. How do you like it? Goog luck with your elk hunt.

Glad to know I’m not the only one who has to keep buying the same gear over and over again. Looking forward to seeing that bull!

Good choice with the zenray. While I do not own that particular model I do own a couple of zenray binoculars. Quality is quite good, especially considering the price. They offer great value.
