New Mexico Unit 16C Elk Hunt

Posted by Darrell under: Elk .

I drew a rifle Elk Hunt in New Mexico’s unit 16C for the week of October 18-22!

I have been applying for a New Mexico elk hunt via Cabellas TAGS for the last couple of years. This year I was drawn! The unit I will be hunting is unit 16C in the Gila National Forest in the SW part of the state.

I’ve already hired an outfitter through Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures, Inc. I’ll be hunting with Wade Johnson Outfitters. I have every intention of fully documenting and writing about this trip on the blog.

If anyone has any experience in unit 16C,  hunting the Gila National Forest, or with Wade Johnson Outfitters, I’d love to hear from you!

Nice! Elk hunting is my passion - I’m thrilled because we’re only about a month away from opening day here in Oregon.

Amazing job. I tell everyone you have to apply to get these amazing tags… It is just not luck!

Good luck and glad to hear you were one of those drawn.

Way to go Darrell. I’m on my third year waiting for a bear permit here in Michigan. From what I’ve heard you’ve drawn a great unit. Can’t wait for your elk hunting blogs.

That’s great!! Are you archery or rifle? Will it be during the rut yet? I know of a local hunter who came back from a New Mexico bow hunt with a set of Elk hardware that filled the back of his truck box. I’m not sure of the area but I do believe his tag was through Cabela’s also. Good luck and look forward to reading about your hunt.

Small world, my friend and I applied for New Mexico elk tags through Cabela’s Tags. We also got pulled in 16c for rifle the week before your trip, Oct 11th - 15th. We booked with Wade Johnson also.

He was recommended by Cabela’s. We hunted last year in Colorado with a guide services Cabela’s recommended and had a great experience. I suspect Wade Johnson will do a good job also.

I’ve heard only good things about Wade through other guides I’ve spoken with. I head to NM for a pronghorn hunt guided by Wade later this week.

In 2006 I hunted Unit 23. t was very thick and rough terrian. I do not remember what section we hunted in as far as A, B or C. We had the best luck in an area called Bull Basin in Unit 23. It was a lot more open with longer shots possible. I was not successful but it was my fault. I got greedy on the first day and then was only offered marginal shots afterward. I was there in the between October 10-15. The bulls had already paired up with their heirum of cows which also made it tougher. The bulls still bugled but would not come seeking our calls since they were already with their group of cows. The smaller satellite bulls sure did come in though. My advice is, “Don’t pass up on the first day what you would gladly shoot on the last day!’” Enjoy the drive between the airport and Reserve, NM. I assume that is where you are staying or close to it. The antelope will be running everywhere in the flat prairie lands just outside of Datil. Enjoy your hunt. By the way I was hunting with a muzzleloader. You will also see bear and mule deer. All three hunters in Unit 16 killed Elk in our camp.

Yeah, you are real cocky aren’t you. Think you can just come to NM and do whatever you want because you have some money (you must to draw an outta state tag). Us actual residents are sick of you out of staters getting all the tags, especially in the Gila and Lincoln. Hunt in your own damn state, I go hunting every year for the meat to actually feed my family here. Takes me forever to draw out for elk or deer nowadays, as in years and years. Just sucks. I say every in-state tag should be filled before they even consider you foreigners at all.
