Have you ever planned a morning hunt and then over slept? I have. I did. I was sick. As I drove out to the cabin yesterday morning, I was having a hard time keeping a positive attitude. I overslept by about an hour and I was afraid my hunt was ruined. I didn’t make it to my spot until about 30 minutes after first shooting light (about 7:20). I quickly set up a blind and hunkered down and started waiting. I have seen many, many turkeys in this spot over the last couple years and have captured several on game cameras over the past few months. I thought it might be good.

At 8:05 a big gobbler with a beautiful beard comes strolling past my blind at about 20 yards. I dropped it with a 3 1/2″ #4 shot shell. After I shot, I saw several other heads working their way through the woods in the direction from which my big Tom had come. I decided to wait and see if they’d come back.

At 8:45 another huge gobbler came in. He was followed by another and then another. I was in shock. I’ve never in my life seen this many big mature Toms travelling together before. I counted 12 big gobblers before I decided to shoot my second one. Did I mention their were 12 that I could count and I’m pretty sure there were several others I couldn’t  see! There was not one single hen (at least visible), just a dozen beautiful gobblers hanging out together. If only I’d had a video camera. I might take my bow and video camera back in a couple days and see if they come in again! I’d love to be able to share it.

One of the turkeys was 22 lbs with an 11 1/2″ beard!

The other weighed 18lbs and had an 8 1/2″ beard!

Can I come down for Spring Gobbler Season? WOW that is one impressive day! I could go out every day this fall and be darned lucky to even see a turkey here and if I got one it would pretty much be pure luck!

Nice birds! I love turkey hunting, and I hate the fact that we do not have a fall season. Also, did you really say 12 gobblers? Sounds like there will be plenty left for me when I come up this spring :)

Nice job, Darrell!

Gotta love fall turkey hunting, huh? All the big boys running around in their bachelor groups…

Ours doesn’t start until next month, but I may have found the mother lode. Now I just have to find time to go.

Definitely nothing quite like a fall turkey hunt - especially when you can choose between a dozen or more gobblers! Bushwacker, no turkeys? Where do you live? That stinks! Phil, looking forward to reading about your fall hunt. I’m guessing you’ll figure out a way to make time for it! Jeff and Kevin, Spring? We’re getting ahead of ourselves a little aren’t we.

wow…..very nice. I tried turkey hunting for my first time in the spring last year and man is that some fun hunting. I didn’t bag one, but I had my first real close encounter and that was cool.

Very nice birds. They’d look great roasted with some potatoes and gravy.

I’m just sayin’……

Nice birds, I can’t wait to hunt Dec. 1st through 7th here at home. Though I would like to have been able to hunt right before Thanksgiving and put a big bird on the table like the old days.
