Venison in The Freezer! and My Game Log

Posted by Darrell under: Whitetail Deer; Game Log .

Well, the meat isn’t in the freezer yet, but it will be by tomorrow afternoon.

I got my first deer of the 2007 season! It isn’t a giant buck, but I won’t care while I’m eating it. I let several does walk before (for some odd and unexplainable reason) deciding to shoot this one. She offered me a great shot at just under 20 yards. Taking her was the right decision, as she laid down where she stood and never got back up!

I rarely shoot does late in the evening hunt, simply because it is harder to find them in the dark and I don’t want to lose one. This particular doe offered me a simple shot and I just took it without giving it a tremendous amount of thought. Each of the other 3 does had given me similar shots, but I let them go (can’t explain why I chose one over the others).  The one I took is perfect eating size. Not too small that you feel like it was a waste to take and not so big that you have to worry about it being tough.

In Missouri you can take one buck before rifle season (with your bow), one during rifle season, and one after. You can buy as many antlerless tags as you want to fill (for a whopping $7 each). I’ll probably buy a couple more antlerless tags, but I don’t have any plans to fill them. I plan on buck hunting up until rifle season. However, I know from experience, that I might change my mind on an impulse and take another doe.

The funny part of this all is that my first deer hunt of the season was on the 14th of October (4 weeks later than I usually get started) and I’m covered in chigger bites. I was fighting off mosquitos when the does came in tonight. What is up with this crazy weather? Wonder if it will mess up (or delay) the rut?

I’m going to start posting a game log. I stole the idea from Arthur over at Simply Outdoors. To be honest, they are more for me than anyone else. It should be an easy way for me to track what is happening on my various stands and where I’m seeing deer and turkey.

Big time congrats!!! Whacking a doe like you did offers the perfect practice and confidence booster for when ‘daddy’ walks by! Enjoy your deer!

Hey great idea on the Hunting Log. I’m glad you liked my ingenious plan. Mine were more for me then anyone else too and plus I figured that some people would actually enjoy it.

Congrats on the doe. Hopefully my time is coming!!!

Congratulations on your doe. It will be nice to have venison in the freezer for the winter.
