2007 Colorado Archery Elk Hunt - A Quick Recap, Days 1-3

Posted by Darrell under: Elk; Colorado; Hunting Stories .

P9140024.JPGThis year we hunted elk, for the first time, during the Colorado archery season. We left home on the evening of October 13th and arrived at the Circle K ranch in Colorado unit 71 on the 14th. This was a year of firsts. My first archery elk hunt. My first visit to the San Juan mountains. My first time to stay at a hunting lodge vs a camp. My first time to call in an elk. My first time to destroy my bow’s sight (twice). My first time to fall into a deep hole on the side of an intimidating mountain. You get the idea!

Day 1 - Arrived at Circle K Ranch (I’ll post about this later). By the time we got checked in and shot our bows it was almost dark. Hunting would begin the next morning.

Day 2 - We hunted less than 2 miles from the ranch. We spent the day hiking and calling. The only ‘elk’ we heard turned out to be other hunters (from Oklahoma and worth their own post). I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was proficient at calling in other hunters! Just before dark I had 3 cows cross a trail in front of me at about 100 yards.  All would have been easy rifle shots, but well out of archery range.

Day 3 - Jeff and I hired a guide. He took us to one of his personal favorite rifle spots. I got the feeling that he was scouting for rifle season. We learned a little about calling elk. However, we didn’t see anything. Before daylight, on our way up the mountain, and afte we had already climbed about 1,000 vertical feet, he stopped us. “Let me know if you are starting to sweat” he informed us. I, of course, was already drenched and I stayed that way the entire day. On our way down the moutain we dropped over 2500 feet in about an hour - straight down a brushy chute. By the time we reached the bottom, my fiber optics were completely ripped from my bow. I was just glad to still be alive!
