Ethics In Mr. Fever’s Neighborhood
by BuckNakedFever
In the past few years I have witnessed a decline of hunter ethics in some areas and an increase of ethics in other areas. Now I’m a person who likes to focus on the positive, however, I’m also a person who likes to “tell it like it is”. This article will outline my personal perspective on hunter ethics in my neighborhood and hopefully bring comments from other hunters that may give us some insight into the state of ethics in other geographical regions. To make this article easier to read I have broken hunter ethics into two categories: hunter-to-hunter ethics and hunter-animal ethics.
Hunter -to-Hunter Ethics
These ethics are based upon the actions that hunters take that impact other hunters nearby and at large. In my opinion these ethics have been on the decline in my area. The negative actions I have seen increasing are as follows:
· Property Line Hunting – I know this is controversial.
· Poaching
· Theft – Not only equipment but also of downed game.
· Trespassing
Now there are a few areas that I have seen an increase in ethics in my neighborhood.
· Locating Downed Game – People come out of the woodwork to help even if it isn’t a buck
· Hunter Recruitment – Even introducing hunting to those even outside of immediate family has been a big one.
Hunter-to-Animal Ethics
These ethics are based upon the actions that hunters take that impact the animals they are pursuing. In the past few years the positives have outweighed the negatives which are very encouraging and they are as follows:
· Locating Downed/Wounded Game – Come hell or high water the hunters in my area go after their animals. Very refreshing from the “didn’t hit him well” view of the past.
· Habitat Improvements – Food plots, native grasses, selective cut timber, you name it people are practicing it to improve the environment for the wildlife.
· Practice – More so than ever hunters are practicing with their weapons to increase their proficiency. Very, very refreshing from the “yah, I’m on the paper” view of the past.
· Research – Get on any hunting forum on the internet and you’ll see hunters pouring over research from their respective DNR to gain insight into the state of the wildlife.
Now the only negative I have heard about lately is also one that I personally find very disheartening.
· Marginal Shots – Taking a risky shot beyond their ability.
In conclusion I it is my opinion that the hunting community is healthy in regards to ethics but we could stand to see some improvement. The area I see that needs the most improvement are the hunter-hunter ethics. We are all brothers and sisters in this beloved sport and we need to start acting like it. The lack of ethics in this area could very well end up in the news and our sport just can’t afford that in today’s society.
Get your butt outdoors.

I am proud to say that BuckNakedFever is a reader of this blog. He has asked me to not use his real name. I, of course, will honor his wishes. I received his submission rather blindly. I don’t know him and haven’t ever talked to him before. However, I really enjoyed his article and it definitely made me think. I hope you will leave some comments about the state of ethics in your locale and welcome BNF to our community. For his diligence in preparing this article, BNF has been awarded an Alpha Logo T-Shirt from the AlphaTrilogy Swag Shop. Thanks, again, BuckNakedFever!

I’m glad to see someone post some ethics on hunting and some great ones at that. I don’t get the chance to talk to any of the hunters around my area and I try to hunt where no hunters are hunting so I can’t comment about the ethics to much in my area but as for areas I hunt away from home I can say they do need improving on greatly. Again great post and keep the writings coming.

Thanks for the compliments guys. When I saw “Hunter Ethics” on Darrell’s list I realized that it would be a great opportunity to organize my own views AND get some sweet schwag. I still would have wrote it for nothing but it’s a great looking shirt, Darrell. Thanks again for the opportunity to share my thoughts and the shirt.
