Hunting Can Save Your Retirement

If you haven’t noticed, the stock market has been crazy lately. Lots of volatility and crazy swings up and down have been a daily occurence for the past few weeks. These are the times that the really really smart people make lots of money. Not so smart people like myself lose lots of money.

Why? Because we react to the markets and start trying to time them. We start selling and then when the market turns we start buying again at higher prices then we sold at. We see our kids college funds and our retirement funds dwindling by the day and we panic and react.

I don’t do this anymore. But, back in the day, I’d stay tuned to the markets and would begin over-reacting to the type of volatility that we see in the markets today. Most experts will tell you that if you have money invested in a retirement plan for the long run, then you shouldn’t react to market changes. Just leave the money alone. This is easier said than done.

I have found the solution. It is quite simple. Just go hunting or fishing. If you are deep in the deer woods or floating on a lake or standing beside a stream, the last thing on your mind will be the stock market. You won’t be worrying about it and you won’t be reacting or over-reacting to market changes.

When I notice the markets going to pot, I simply head to the woods. Once there, I won’t give another thought to what my Yahoo stock is doing. It seems a little ironic that I might be able to retire a little earlier because instead of selling stock into volatility - I simply went hunting!

I second that. An excellent idea. I personally don’t pay much attention to the stock market, but I do know that the woods are an escape from many other things as well. A great idea no matter what you’re escaping from.

Nothing like an escape to the woods for a little healing. I can see it now, the financial district of NYC is empty due to the start of archery season!
