Outdoor Accolades: 7 Reasons You Fail, Tricking Kids, Start A Blog, Six Words, & More

7 Reasons You Fail To Take A Deer Every Year
I’ve known guys that will hunt for years and years and never get a deer. Most see deer every year, some shoot towards deer every year, and still they come home empty handed. One guy I used to hunt with had 9 straight years of hard hunting without ever taking a deer. Don, at the Buck Hunter’s Blog posted 7 reasons people fail. While, I don’t think the list is comprehensive, it is very helpful and worth a review- even if you take your share of deer each year.
Convince a Kid You Are An Outdoor Expert
I wrote this week about the outdoors being fun. Dana, on her Wild WoodsWoman blog, which I’ve just started following wrote a cool post about convincing kids that you are an expert. When I think about it, kids really do think we know everything. In fact, now that I’m all grown up I still think my grandpa new everything about the outdoors! This is a great post on a really interesting blog that I highly suggest you take a look at.
So You Want to Start a Blog
Kristine wrote a nice article about starting your own blog. The secret is now officially out. Starting a blog is not difficult, nor do you have to be a computer whiz. You do need a strong committment to sharing your passion for the outdoors. Outdoor Bloggers Summitt has posted a pretty lofty Mission statement. Part of their mission is to “offer incentive and support for new bloggers who might wish to blog about the outdoors”. This post about starting your own blog is a great step towards fulfilling that mission.
The Fishing Jones Short Story Contest
The other day, Pete at Fishing Jones wrote an interesting post about Hemingway’s attempt at a six word story. In the comment section I posted my own six word story which was “The boat sunk. My mother cried.” I thought it was good….. so good that someone from Hollywood might make it into a motion picture! Pete, though, just ignored it like he’s ignored all my comments. Anyway, Pete came up with a great idea and is having a contest to see who comes up with the best fishing story in six words. There are already LOTS of post. I tried my hand again at the six word story: “Submitted Great Story. Ignored Once Again”

I love the six word fishing story idea. That’s so cool.
Plus you pointed out two outdoor blogs I hadn’t found yet. Guess I’ll have to pay those guys a visit and try to entice them to support the OBS.

I enjoyed the post, there, Darrell. I kinda like the multi-topic approach.
I like the idea of the six word story, too.
Hemingway is my demi-hero (he had too many faults to be my true hero, but damn he could write!).

Thanks for posting your six-word story, much appreciated. Your sumbission was not ignored, it will be listed with your URL when I post all the entrees. (I think yours was second, and I started the contest after noticing the first guy had posted a reply…)

Yep, I thought the idea of a six word story was a great idea! Pete, I was just giving you a hard time AND trying to send some traffic your way and get you a few more six word story submissions!

Hi Darrell!
Thank you for highlighting my post on kids! I really like the format of your post, I want to try that in the future. And the six-word story was such a great idea. I loved it! I just had to post one (didn’t realize the contest was over darn-it!) Mine was from a true story I had covered in a post in July:
Warden checked. Walleye cut. Woman blamed.
The 6-word story is an idea you could recycle here! You could put out a call for 6 word stories about hunting trips or something, BUT every story has to include either the word “Alpha” or “Trilogy”……..and now I’m liking this idea so much that after you do it, I’ll do with the words “Wild” or “Woodswoman”!

I like this idea a lot, Dana! I’m planning on giving it a shot in the near future AND I’m going to offer prizes!
