Outdoor Accolades: Baseball Cards, Ed Questions, Foes, Blood, and more.

Baseball Cards & Deer Hunting

Are you wondering what baseball cards and deer hunting have in common? So was I when I first saw this title. I will admit, though, that the connection Bryan made between the two was very well done. It has inspired me to write my own piece about ‘blissful ignorance’ - in this case the ‘ignorance’ of killing a small buck. Check out this post and if you haven’t already done so, add Bryans blog to your RSS reader. He is a new, but very talented, outdoor blogger. Welcome Bryan! NOTE: After I posted this,  Bryan moved to a new wordpress site a http://deerPhD.com

A Question About Hunter Education–From the Wife

Cliff’s wife poses a great question. What really is hunter education? Most of us think about the ’safety’ and ’survival’ aspects of hunter ed - which is very important. But, as she brilliantly points out hunter education is much more. I don’t teach a hunter education class. However, as a hunter I have the responsibility to help ‘educate’ others. For instance, my son and daughter will know how to locate a deer trail. The won’t learn that in class. They’ll learn that from me! Cliff followed up his wife’s post with a post about teaching your children about the basics of deer hunting. I’d love to attend Cliff’s class.

Finding Blood

I’ve posted about the tips over at Outdoor U several times in the past. But, I just need to say once again - if you aren’t already following this blog, you really need to start. After coming back from a two week hiatus I spent hours and hours reading the post on my fellow outdoor bloggers blogs. Craig had SEVERAL great tips during my absence. This one on how to find blood when trailing game is one I’ve never heard before. One of the things I love about Craig is that unlike myself he is not long winded. His finding blood post is shorter than this paragraph recommending it - yet it is an AWESOME tip.

Other Blogs in Your Niche; Friend or Foe?

Steve made a point here that I’ve been trying to preach for a long time - other outdoor bloggers are our FRIENDS - not our enemies! Don’t be afraid to link to other blogs with similar subject matter!

How to obtain Permission to hunt on Private Land

Everyone wants to hunt on private land. However, if you don’t have friends or family that owns large tracts of land - finding PRIVATE land to hunt on can seem daunting. Rick, at Tails and Trails wrote a great article on how to go about getting permission to hunt on private land. Unless you already own or have access to more land than you’ll ever need to hunt on - I suggest you head over and read this article.

Thanks for the double plug, Darrel.

I’m ecstatic that my kids are enjoying learning about deer and deer hunting as much as they are. They actually look forward to the outings and practice on their own when they have the chance to do so.

I’d love to have you, as well. Maybe we could both teach the other something. Either that or use our bow and arrows to light things on fire or blow stuff up. ;)

Bryan, welcome to the outdoor blogging club! I’ve really been enjoying your posts.

Cliff, why do I think we might both learn a bit and probably still find a way to get ourselves into all kinds of trouble?

Hi Darrell,
You’ve been on my blog list to check out - and I finally got to it today! Looks really really good. My favorite blogs are those with useful posts like yours. Would you like to exchange links? And speaking of tips for hunting on private land, I posted recently about asking farmer’s at farmer’s markets for permission to hunt. They get alot of crop damage and may be very open to additional hunters.
