Outdoor Posts of Note - My Last One
Posted by Darrell under: Blog Posts of Note .
I’m changing the format and name of these shout outs to my fellow outdoor bloggers. So this is the last one of this format. Some of these post are several days old - as I’ve been busy and behind. Here goes:
Can someone please tell me what a ‘fishing rodeo’ is? Shupac at Find The River wrote an article entitled I Wonder If He Caught Something about a senator who reportedly met with politicians and prostitutes at a fishing rodeo. What is a fishing rodeo?
I’ve never really considered bloggers to be reporters. But, Steve at Skinny Moose Media made some interesting comparisons between traditional reporters and new media (bloggers). The difference between the two, as Steve suggests, is the ability of bloggers to give their opinion on the news rather than just re-gurgitate it. A blogger can state his opinion without too much fear of repurcussions. This isn’t so with most reporters. It is interesting to me that as a reader I become frustrated when I read a traditional media piece that seems to be slanted by opinion (and is not just a clear statement of fact) and then equally irritated when I read a piece of news on a blog that isn’t wrapped in an opinion. Seems almost like a contradiction, doesn’t it?
Pump action slug guns for deer could be the way to go? Yes! I’ve known this for years. Rick, at Tail and Trails decided to share this fact with the masses. I swear by my Remington 870 Express 12 ga slug gun with rifle sites. I’ll even admit to killing a rabbit or two with it - when in a pinch and not having another shotgun handy.
We all know that there is more happiness in giving then in receiving. Deerslayer reminds us of this in his post Lend a Helping Hand. I believe that by helping someone in need we reap more benefit than the person we help. Everyone feels overwhelmed at times, yet by doing something to help others (even when we need help ourselves) we will reap the most benefit.
Skinny Moose Media is seeking online journalist for each state. What a great opportunity to get additional exposure on the Internet! Plus, you might even get a press pass! Steve is looking for serious people that can write at least 5 or 6 posts per week. Contact him fast if this is something that appeals to you.
Rex posted a great story on Deer Camp Blog entitled don’t run her back. It had me really laughing. The funny thing is that I, too, have run out of arrows shooting at a single deer. I’d come loafing into camp with a handful of bent arrows and busted broadheads and endure the goodnatured ribbing and laughs of my family. Thanks Rex for bringing back some great memories.
Cliff at Hunting Sense wrote an article I wish I’d have written because I think it every time I’m in the scents section of any store - Hunting Cover Scents that Just Don’t Make Sense! How many skunks do you see in trees? How many acorns in the ole corn field. Great points Cliff!
Kristine has written the three “Be’s” - a look at how we can perpetuate hunting. The first Be - Be supportive. The Second Be - Be Welcoming. The Third Be - Be Together. Check out these great articles!
I’ve never seen a deer and cat licking each other until now! There is a story and picture to prove it on the Shed Antler blog. Check out the story and then post your comment about what is going on.
I live in the 417 area code - which is famous worldwide for ‘meth’. I was thrilled to find a post on the Rack Tracker blog about Being careful when Afield. This post talks about identifying meth labs and pot farms and what you should do if you stumble on to one.

Can’t wait to see the new format, although I’ll miss this one a bit. I always love to read these sorts of posts as they point me toward blogs I otherwise might have missed.
Although I’m going to have to stop adding blogs to my reading schedule soon or I’ll never be doing anything else.

Good post. I haven’t read the one on hunting deer with slugs but will as soon as I’m done writing this comment. When I’m not bow hunting, I’m usually hunting with my Mossberg Slugster 500. Gets the job done.

Kristine, do I ever know what you mean! I just hope that I can retain everything that I am learning from all the blogs I read.
Rex, it was a great story. Being true, just makes it that much better. What a great bonding experience with you and your dad - something you would both never forget!
Matt, in the area I live slug guns are not readily excepted into the deer hunting world. 50% of the hunters are toting 30/30s. I have nothing against the Marlin and Winchester 30/30s (have hunted with them myself in the past), but I love hunting with my trusty old slug gun.

Steve, I was wondering what “link live” was!
