Keeping It Positive
Posted by Darrell under: Blogging About The Outdoors .
I started, today, to write a post about a horrible experience I had trying to return something at a local Outdoor Retailer (see I’m not even telling which one). However, about 2/3 of the way through describing the experience, I realized something important: I was being negative.
Is being negative going to encourage anyone’s love of the outdoors? Is it going to inspire a desire to spend this next weekend camping or fishing? Probably not. It is just going to remind everyone of their negative experiences and probably encourage some “this is what happened to me” comments.
I mentioned last week that I’m ‘working on’ my vision for this blog. I almost have it complete. Now, as I look at it and at what I want to accomplish with this blog, I realize how important ‘keeping it positive’ is.
I’m not promising that every post will be positive and will help instill a love of the outdoors. After all, I’m imperfect and will likely slip up - or get so irritated about something that I’ll just have to vent. However, I’ll do my best to keep the topics positive - and either entertaining, helpful, or practical.

While I applaud your goal of keeping it positive, I also think there are positive ways to talk about a negative experience.
You could post about your bad experience with the unnamed retailer so that other people who deal with the public could learn what not to do. You don’t necessarily have to rant about the company that didn’t do things correctly, they would just become a “how not to do this” example.
Just a thought.

Kristine, you are correct, of course. Sometimes sharing a negative experience can have positve results. However, the story I was writing would be hard pressed to result in anything positive.
