Safety Lesson Learned: Before Hanging Feeders, Check Your Rope
Posted by Darrell under: Tips & Ideas .
It seems simple enough that anyone with any common sense wouldn’t need reminded. Well, maybe I don’t have any common sense.
A couple days ago, Billy and I spent the day working on treestands and cleaning up brush (for those who don’t know it, we had a terrible ice storm in the ozarks this past winter which destroyed the local woods). We also spent some time hanging up a couple feeders and setting cameras.
I spent some serious dough on feeders and cameras. Anyone that uses them knows ‘they aint cheap’. In fact, I spent over $120 in just batteries. What did I not spend big money on, though? You guessed it - rope!
I realized, after already leaving bass pro, that I didn’t have any rope. So, I stopped in at the nearest wally world on my way to the woods. The only part of wal-mart I’m familiar with is the sporting goods section. And, look as I might I couldn’t find any decent rope. I did find several packs of camo cord. I figured I could make it work as there wasn’t any alternative.
Wrong. A $1.50 package of camo cord will not hold up a 15 gallon feeder filled with corn. I am glad I wasn’t standing directly under it when the rope broke. However, I’m not glad that because of my mental laziness, I ruined a really nice brand new feeder. You see, I also learned that even a metal feeder will not survive a 10′ fall when loaded with 120lbs of corn.
Remember, before hanging a feeder - check your rope AND don’t ever stand under it!
Hey, this is almost like Kristine’s Safety Friday!

That is a good lesson and a good reminder on Safety Friday.
Did you totally ruin the feeder? That’s a real bummer if you did.

Standing under a loosely hung feeder sounds like something a Texas Aggie would do!

Kristine, the feeder was busted to pieces. I paid $79.99 for that safety lesson. Jon, it definitely wasn’t my finest hour!
