Outdoor Posts of Note - July 11 & 12, 2007

Posted by Darrell under: Blog Posts of Note .

How often should new blog posts appear? Kristine, asked that question in one of her post. Not only is her article worth a read, but the comments generatered are quite enlightening too.  Kudos Kristine for picking a really interesting subject.

Jon Bryan did a great posts about a Kamikaze Dove. It’s pretty funny and I’d have loved to have seen it happen (no offense Jon). Sometimes the hunter gets taken out by the hunted. Jon, just be glad it was a dove and not a moose.

We’ve all heard by now about the Yellowstone drought. The Tennessee Valley Angler posted some practical suggestions on what we fishermen can do. I especially appreciate his comment “I’d advise against falling into a deep depression and pondering if this is THE END due to global warming or some such thing.” This is some good advice. The last thing we need is hype or hysteria.

In his article “Grouse Have Something To Crow About” Robert gives us an encouraging picture of the growing grouse population. I hate to admit this, but I’ve never been grouse hunting. After reading Robert’s post, I must admit that I’m itching to give grouse a shot.

Tom Remington shares some good news about a proposal to allow limited hunting of Mount Saint Helens Elk herd. Anytime I hear about hunting opening up where it was not previously allowed, I become excited. As Tom points out, this isn’t all a bed of roses. Seems like some complicated bureacratic red tape to go through in order to ‘qualify’ for the hunt - but hey, the first step is acknowleding that the herd is strong enough that it could benefit from a harvest of some sort.

Craig, at Outdoor U, has another great tip. His post “The Perfect Knot” explains the improved clinch knot. This is the knot I’ve been using for tying on fishing lures since I was about 6. I didn’t know the official name of this knot until reading Craig’s post. If you don’t know what an improved clinch knot is - take a look at Craig’s post.  While you are there take a look at his best baits chart, too. It would be helpful for a beginning fisherman.

Am I too busy to hunt? I don’t think so. Dave Hurteau asked this question to spur some discussion. Weigh in with your opinion.

Speaking of questions, here is a great one “Would you pay to shed antler hunt?” To tell the truth I’ve never even considered this before. Its a great question and I’m still pondering it.

It is interesting how you can stuble across a blog and find yourself continually being pulled back. That is what has happened to me with Western Wanderer. This guy just keeps positng great and helpful stuff. His latest is on using USFS maps. More useful information. Thanks Rack Tracker.

I’ll be gone for the next several days (spearfishing and hillbilly surfing). I have a couple post scheduled, but won’t be around to leave comments, etc. Talk to you next week.

Darrell,

You’ve never tried grouse hunting? My, God, son, you haven’t lived until you’ve been humbled by old ruff.

Great list of posts. I’ll have to go investigate the blogs I don’t already read. My blogroll is eventually going to need its own page.

Darrell, I love grouse hunting also. My problem is that I haven’t yet learned how to cook them and make them taste worth a darn. Got any suggestions?

Robert - I can’t wait to be humbled. I’ve got a friend that is already working on setting up a grouse hunt for us. Scratch, I did a search and came up with some recipes that sure sound good: http://fooddownunder.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=grouse
