Outdoor Blog Posts of Note - July 4 & 5, 2007
Posted by Darrell under: Blog Posts of Note .
A post was put up at the Muskoka Outdoors Blog entitled “Another Great Fishing Quote“. It is a good quote from an unknown author. The picture posted with the post says it all. Sometimes sleeping beats out fishing. Looks like someone else has mastered the ability to do both at the same time.
Michelle at Fishing Fiesta introduces us to yet another beautiful British Columbia fishing spot - Yellow Lake.
The Shed Antler has a great post about buying shed antlers. I’ve always wondered how they are graded and what they should sell for. Now I know.
Tom, over at the Black Bear Blog has been busy today. Lots of new posts! One, I recommend that you check out is “If Hunting and Fishing Were Stopped, Who Would Pick Up The Bill?“. The posts talks about wildlife hunters and wildlife viewers. I’m a member of BOTH groups so I found it extremely interesting.
Kristine at Hunt Smart Think Safety posted an article about Appearance Matters (Even for Websites). She is right, of course, appearance does matter. However, I’ll always argue that functionality, ease of use, and intuitive design matters much more than appearance. I remember my mom teaching me to look for what is on the inside and not for the outward beauty. I think this is true of websites too. The quality of the content and the ease of use is more important than appearance. The beauty of websites, though, are that once you have the insides (intuitive navigation, search, quality content) right, you can always go back and improve the appearance. Kristine also mentions that she is always tweaking to make her site better. That is awesome as anything, now matter how pretty or functional, can be improved!
I found a great new site today - The Tennessee Valley Angler. It had a great article about fishing Orange Beach (gulf coast) with a charter company. It was written so well it made me feel like I was there. It also had discusses some politically motivated hogwash by the National Marine Fisheries Service that has some negative impact on fishermen. Just how many bureaucracies are there trying to cast their net into the regulation fray, anyway? It seems like I learn about a new one everyday!

Darrell,
I have to agree with you, ease of use and the ability to find things on a web site are much more important than appearance. Try building a post title around that idea though!
I’ve also seen a lot of sites that were looked just terrible. Granted they usually had useability problems and navigation problems as well, and those will also torpedo a site. Still, if you go to a site and it doesn’t look at least a little appealing, how likely are you to stay around and find out if it works well?

Site appearance and useability are neck-in-neck for me personally. I used to teach Fireworks and Dreamweaver several years ago, and I had a chapter written on site design. The studnets always whined about it, because we were, “wasting time one theory stuff when we should be learning the tools.” Until, of course, I showed them samples of bad sites. That they, the students, made… Nice writeup, Kristine.
Thanks for the kinds words, Darrell, I really appreciate it. Allen and the guys on the Rookie and Rookie II always make for a good outing. Like I said, with all the new rules in place - and more coming - it’s more important than ever to do your homework before chartering a Gulf trip. These guys know their stuff. If you’re headed that way, give them a call.

BTW - Please forgive the gross mis-spellings and any poor grammar above. Apparently the adult beverages are working well tonight, and I did not edit as necessary before posting.
I’ll be here all week - don’t forget to tip your waitresses…
