Another Great Day Of Spearfishing at Bull Shoals Lake In Arkansas
Posted by Darrell under: SPEARFISH HUNTING!; Arkansas .
On Monday, June 25 a group of friends and I made the trek to Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas for another day of Spearfishing. I drove down to Branson on Saturday to rent our air from Branson Scuba Sports. I had 10 full tanks of air in the bed of my truck for the entire weekend.
We left early Monday morning and arrived at the Peel Ferry in time for the 9am crossing. If you’ve never crossed a lake on a ferry, it is something you should give a try sometime. It is especially nice in the morning on relatively still water. Anyway, once again we rented a pontoon boat from the 125 Marina in Peel Arkansas. The Tricon 30’ pontoon rents for $185 a day, which seems like a bargain when split between 4 or 5 guys.
We hit several of our favorite spots for a total of 9 dives! There were 5 guys and we ended the day with 3 Walleye and 7 catfish (and one sunfish). We saw several flatheads between us, but flathead season doesn’t start until July 15. We saw (and shot at) some stripers, too. Stripers are so skittish that it is rare for us to see one.
On opening weekend we found more fish in the rocks and ledges than on brush. On Monday, just one week later, we found more fish in the brush (which is what we expect).
The water seemed a little clearer Monday than it was on opening weekend. With the better visibility we had some beautiful dives. We didn’t make it down to visit our prehistoric turtle, but maybe next time. We fished a couple spots that I hadn’t been before which was nice. I did see a monster cat (over 4’), but never got a shot at it.
In the interest of full disclosure I will now mention that of the 10 fish that we cleaned Monday evening - I was responsible for only the sunfish (which I took a video of). I did take a big carp that would have won me the big fish pot, but none of the other guys would let me count it – even when I said I’d eat it.
We’ll be at Bull Shoals again the weekend of July 15. Watch out Flatheads!
