Should Man Who Killed Bear To Protect Kid Be Fined? Black Bear Blog.
This is the question asked on the Black Bear Blog. I ecourage you to weigh in with your comments on either the BBB site or the Freakonomics site - or at least read everyone elses comments. My opinion, BTW, is that killing a 300lb bear with a stick of firewood is highly unlikely. Bears are notoriously hard to kill. IF a bear was attacking my 6 year old son, I’d do everything possible to kill it, too. It is unlikely that the story is completely lies, because I’ve never met a 6 year old that can stick to a lie. It must have happened or something very close (because the 6 year old surely believes it happened). As for the $75 fine, I’d be thrilled that I wasn’t being fined more. I’ve heard of people killing animals (in self defense) and being hit with SERIOUS charges. I’d gladly pay the $75 and, regardless if I’d been negligient with my food or not, be more careful next time. I’d also keep a close eye on my kids when camping in bear country, and have a serious talk with my 6 year old about chasing bears. You can read the original story here.
Safety Friday: Poison Ivy and Poison Oak Hunt Smart Think Safety Blog
Kristine put up a helpful article about Poison Ivy and Poison Oak. If you are prone to getting it, or are going to be out where you could get it over the Holiday, it is worth taking a look.
The Crossbow Controversy - Outdoors with Othmar
In Othmar’s post he brings up one of the raging debates within the hunting community. He has set up a poll on his site so you can cast your vote. I personally don’t hunt with a crossbow. They just look bulky and cumbersome to me. But, I certainly don’t care if someone else prefers it. More power to them! If someone prefers their home-made long bow to my compound - hey great. You hunt deer with a .270? Good for you. I’ll prefer a 30-06. Hey, that’s my choice. Both are great calibers. Othmar makes a statement on an earlier post that we should all remember before becoming embroiled in these types of debates “Wouldn’t it be wiser for us to be more tolerant of each other and pick our battles with the ones that really threaten our way of life instead of with our own?“ Check out his post from today.

Never having gotten a poison ivy rash myself, I don’t know first hand how irritating they can be. I do have friends that have gotten into it though, and they looked miserable. I hope my post can help people avoid it and the irritation it causes.
Thanks for letting people know about the post.

Thanks for the links. Looks like you and I share the same opinion on this topic. It really does not matter what a hunter chooses to hunt with, as long it is legal.
